my 1977 70hp will just barely turn over, not enough to start it, put a hot battery in it thinking maybe bad battery, no help, still drags, removed all plugs, spins over freely, did a compression, top 2 cylinders around 130, bottom around 110, could it be the starter? could timing have gotten off some how?
what else can I check?
thanks

Check all battery connections ,mke sure they are clean and tight. no corrosion on starter bolts and they are tight; all solenoid wires clean and tight. check all connections that they are clean and tight. Sounds like a bad ground somewhere. Good luck.:)

Could be a bad connection from the battery to the starter or ground. The connections have to be veryclean. Are the cables crunchy when you bend them? If so, might be time for some new ones.

Boydog, I too am from Hattiesburg; I assume you are carrying the starter to a shop; one of the best in town is Auto Armature on Broadway drive Bob will be able to tell you in an instant if anything is wrong with it and will be able to fix it. PM me if I can help.:)

Boydog, please post what you find out from the shop about your starter. I've been having the exact same symptoms with my '85 90hp Johnson.
Thanks in advance!
