I'm perplexed, I'm trying to wire up a new ignition switch to my 1977 merc 500 thunderbolt. The harness running from the controls back to the engine is 7 pin, the harness at the engine is 6 pin. This shows correct on the schematics.
I do believe the harness on the boat is aftermarket because the colors do not match the schematics and it's giving me a fit.
What really confuses me is the 7th hole in the center of the plug is supposed to be a white wire coming from the ignition switch and then that hole does not connect to any pin on the engine side.
The harness on the boat looks like a 7 pin but the bottom hole has no contacts in it and there is only 6 wires ( blue, black, red, green, yellow, and white) I've included a picture with my plug color coded.
It appears that on this setup red is ground, green is hot, yellow is yellow going to the starter solenoid (the only one that matches the schematics), blue should be gray and goes to the choke, the white wire should be orange and is supposed to go to the tilt kill switch (which I do not have anymore), and black is supposed to be a white wire going to the hole that connects to no pin.
The ignition switch I bought makes it more confusing the color code is red-battery, black-magneto ground, yellow/red stripe-solenoid, black/yellow stripe-magneto, purple-ignition, yellow/black stripe-choke
I'm taking a wild guess here but starting with the ignition switch; red goes to green, black goes to red, yellow/red stripe goes to yellow, yellow/black stripe goes to blue. After that I have no clue, another guess the black/yellow stripe goes to white and purple goes to the hole with no pin on the engine side. Does this sound right?
So, did I confuse you as much as I'm currently confused? This was supposed to be a simple switch swap
Thank you
