I own a 1977 Hammonds with the 235 Merc and OMC outdrive.
After running the lake pulling tubers, it now dies when shifted into gear. The shift lever seems to have been acting up a bit too.
I was thinking at first the Lower unit was getting hot and "binding" but after reading all about Shift cables I'm confused.
After sitting for about 45 mins it'd go into gear and run....so in to the dock I went...:joyous:
I did have the lower oil changed prior to this season.
Thanks in advance for your wisdom, Marshall in La Center,Wa

WIth it being difficult to shift, suggest checking the shift interuptor and ajustment

Looks mechanical to me but I'm not an OMC guru. The shift interuptor is on top or top to one side of the engine on the shift plate. Benn messing around with OMC drive some because friends have them, but I'm no expert

By the way your title says it is a Merc 235, the 235 is an OMC Ford motor

So I'm thinking now that my "expert" helper who said it was Electric shift and used Elec shift lower gear oil might have caused me some lower end damage??...tell me it ain't so Joe...

Can I change it out and back to reg Gear oil and be okay??

Don't do anything yet, this needs to be in the OMC section where the folks work on this stuff. I was guessing from what it looks like and in 1977 I didn't know of anyone in small boats using electric shifts. Again no expert.

Hope we can get the moderator to move this thread to OMC

You are correct Sir, If I could only read I'd be dangerous:facepalm:
OMC 235 Beastly 351 runs great, just fighting this shift issue it seems.

Here is what I know. The shift interuptor switch is usually locaked on a plate attached to the exhaust riser. It will have two cables located their and a switch plate and switch. The interuptor switch, interupts the engine spark to unload the drive so shifting can happen. If it is not working correctly there will be hard shifting and engine can die. Seee pic

After engine stalls, don't move shifter at all, If the roller is NOT centered, the switch contacts have closed and therefore killed the engine.
