I have a 1977 Mercury 1500 that I got very cheap and have been restoring. The dash only has one gauge, which is a working fuel gauge. I would like to install a speedometer. Does anyone know how I could do this?

Sure, buy a speedo with a pitot. Install the pitot on the transom, so it's end will drag in the water. Now connect the pressure tube from the pitot to the gauge, which you have installed in the dashboard.

Easy enough! Also, I haven't gotten to it yet, but the trim isn't working. I can hear the trim motor running when I press the 'down' and 'trailer' buttons, but not with the up button. I think it may have to do with the manual release valve, because the motor is easily lifted an lowered by hand. Any advice for this?

If the trailer button works but not the up button on the throttle, it's the up limiters gone bad
Try to connect the 2 wires from the outboard together and try the up trim, bet it works..if you can move the engine up/down by hand, there is air in the lines, fill up the resivoir and cycle the motor up/down t bleed, check for leaks
Good luck
I have the 78 1400 merc..

Screw the trim limit switch. Jumper the wires that go to it together and the trim button will work.....or use the trailer button to trim and tilt.
