Ok, I am a first time boat owner so this boat was probably not the best one to choose for my 1st...but I will say the price was right and the condition of the boat is very very good. It has a 1979 Johnson Javelin 100hp outboard ( i would almost swear it purrs) that is also extremely clean and was very well maintained. I have only taken out the boat once in the month that I have owned it. I cannot find any owner manuals for this thing.
1) It is an outboard but has a blower on the dash...do I need to run that since it's an outboard? I didn't think I did.
2) we took it out and had been on the water for 20 mins and a load buzzer (more like a loud continuous beeeeeep) started going off so I turned the motor off...but it kept going for about 30 to 45 seconds. Then I started it back up after it went off. Any ideas what that was?
I have been so frustrated that I put it up for sale...seems to stressful and just my ignorance is probably what killed my enthusiasm so maybe I can gain some knowledge here.
Thanks in advance,
Bryan

The buzzing was probably the over temp warning buzzer. Is there a telltale water spout coming out of the upper portion of the motor, usually above the leg?

First off, thanks for your reply.
I don't recall seeing one...but like I said, my ignorance is pretty high on the boating meter. EDIT: You meant the 'pee-hole' right? I am going to check to see if they hose is clogged or something.
Thanks.
Sorry for being so 'boat-dumb' but thanks for the help.

Bryan there should be a little hole just below the engine cover, about the size of a stirring straw. This is by some called a "pee hole". When everything is working right, you should get a steady stream of water from that hole. Looks like someone peeing out the back of the motor. in the foot or lower unit there is an impeller or water pump. These are made of rubber, and over time will harden and no longer pump the water. So either the pee hole is plugged or the pump not working. If it's the pump, there are a lot of videos on you tube about changing the impeller. It's part of regular maintance. If no water coming out of the pee hole it will overheat the motor and that could be costly. Nice boat by the way.

Thanks. I hooked it up to the water hose and started it right up. Water was coming out in a nice strong stream and the motor was purring nicely. I wish knew why the loud buzz happened. It makes me nervous because I don't want to mess it up because it is in such good shape. Not to mention being stuck out on the water.
I dont need to run the blower right?

Welcome aboard Bryan.

You don't need to run the blower, but if the gas tank is enclosed where the vent is it can't hurt to evacuate some of those fumes.

When you can, take the boat over to the ramp and fire up the motor, check that tell-tale stream again. I'm wondering if your impeller is shot. The hose might force water up to the motor just from pressure (maybe not too).

Bryan, another thing to look at if the motor is oil injected, meaning you don't have to mix the oil in the gas. Some motors have a small tank on the motor for oil. These have a warning buzzer if the oil gets to low.

I have to mix the oil in a 50:1. I will take it to the ramp and try that this week. Thanks for all the advice!

Does the buzzer come on running it hooked to the hose, or only when your on the water?Bryan you should also post what the motor is and what the model and serial numbers are

I only took it out one time so far...and it only buzzed at me once for about 15-20 seconds. I will get the numbers off of it tomorrow after work, but it is a 1979 Johnson Javelin 100hp. When I have it hooked up to the hose it is just idling and i did not leave it running for a while. It probably buzzed at me around the 15 minute mark...we only went from the boat dock to a restaurant which is about a mile a way and my daughter was a bit scared so we went really really slow...probably could have walked there quicker :)
Thanks again for all the advise...I was worried people here would be like the ones at the boat ramp...glad I was wrong.

EDIT: 1979 100 HP Johnson Javelin Model 100TLR79 Serial #:J5144836

Maybe the impeller is shot like southcog said of maybe it was plugged and the hose forced it out. Put it on the lake and check. Good thing is impellers aren't super expensive to fix.

Hopefully you got it for a good price and if something is wrong it won't cost to much.

Impeller would be pretty simple ... it needs to be changed rather regularly, so it wouldn't be a big deal if it was toasted. Really what you wanna' make sure of is that you're not overheating the outboard. It's possible the alarm is faulty as well ... but, you won't know until you start confirming stuff.

just came back from dropping it in the water...and water came out of the pee hole...ran it for a couple of minutes. Perhaps the tube was clogged with dirt or something and worked itself out...I had only been on the water just a few minutes and was pretty near sitting at idle.

Is the stream coming out of the "pee hole" a strong stream of just a trickle?

The pump in the leg can go bad just from sitting and age so it's not a big concern, fairly easy to change.

Alarm go off again?

no alarm again...and its a pretty good stream. Just took the boat out and it worked fine. Perhaps it was just clogged or something from sitting for close to a year. Regardless, someone offered me what I paid for it so I just sold it an hour ago...thanks for all the help. The buyer is also new to boating and I directed him to this site since everyone here is great.
Thanks again.

Thinking of buying another one? If so maybe someone on here from your area would help you have a look at it.
