I think this is how to start one... I recently purchased a new project. This will be the first time I restore a boat and I'm excited. The best way to learn is to try. I have read a lot of good information on this forum and with the help of fellow restorers and Starcrafters alike, I will hopefully give a new life to an old boat. My Project: 1977 Starcraft Mariner 21ft CC with a 90 H.P. Evinrude (missing the lower unit). I just purchased this boat for $700. It needs some work, but ready to get the elbow grease going and the hands dirty. As it is the holidays, it may be a slow start....but it will be a start.

Welcome to the Starcraft fleet Irish, you are in the right place.:D

Nice deal you got on that big tub, that 90 Evinrude should be a good one for that boat once you get the a new "other half" bolted on. You might be able to find a parts motor with a blown cylinder very cheap that has a good lower unit.

Looking forward to seeing what you plan for the Mariner, that topper frame looks like it's in good shape.

Great project you got there. A 21' CC will be a nice roomy fishin' rig. Welcome to the Starmada!

Welcome Adam. I see you read the threats...err, requirements and posted pics. Now all that is left is for CBK to pay your dues for the year and you're all set. Since your down south the winter shouldn't be a big hold up on the resto so keep posting pics and we will be keeping up with ya.

Looks like fun, and the type of rig I'd like to pick up down the line.

Re: 1977 Starcraft 21ft CC

I will definitely be posting pics. I've started my digital scrapbook on all my computers to make sure I don't lose any pics. Working 12 hour days though, really limit my time to get started until the weekends. My plans are to check the motor (make sure starter moves, check compression, fabricate a water pump and see if it will start up). After that, take motor off and start the dismantle process. The floor is pretty solid, but going to pick it up anyway and see what's under it. I saw some particles from white foam by the transom. If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it right.
Speaking of foam, is all the blue or pink insulation foam boards the same? Where I'm working they got some 4X8 foot pieces which are 2 inches thick. And other scraps that I may be able to get for that magical price of "free". If they use it and I can't they are setting me up with their supplier so I can get it at a discounted price. It is Dow brand polystyrene.
That's the game plan so far and I will be taking pictures every step of the way and posting them....if you find some of them boring, I'll apologize in advance, I just would love to hear both positive and negative remarks along the way. Like I said earlier, if I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it right!!
I was looking at the brochures of the 86 Starcraft and I would like to restore it to same kind of design, with the deck/storage in the bow.

I like the enclosure the PO had. The wood is good, just needs to be refinished and the hinges tightened up some. I plan on reusing it. What do you think?

Provided the wood is solid as mentioned, I agree it would be very nice if refinished.

Yay... another big "tinny" resto. Cool boat Irish, and I see the usual suspects have welcomed you already, but just to say, "hello and best of luck with her" from downunder. :)

J-
I know what you mean, it's been in the 30s here and we have been under a freeze warning for a few days. Then tomorrow's high in the 70s again....gotta love it. Yes I am going to be working outside as well. If my garage were just a few feet longer and a lot more cleaned out....I would do it in there.

Re: 1977 Starcraft 21ft CC

Had a slow weekend. Due to the freeze warnings we've been getting, I spent most of the weekend winterizing my elderly neighbor lady's house. I did take the canopy frame off, removed the seat and looked at the wiring.....I've seen birds nests made with more organization. I planned on a complete rewire anyway. I'm particular about that...I redid my father's boat he just got this past summer so I knew where everything went and was grounded properly. I was unable to start the boat....first off, after I took the cowling off, I noticed the starter was missing; secondly, one of the spark plug wires was broken off the boot; and lastly, most of the wires on the motor were weathered, cracked, etc. I am going to check the tilt and trim to see if it functions properly. If it does, my father has an 85 hp Johnson of close to the same year. He doesn't have power tilt and that is a heavy motor to lift manually. Going to see if we can put it on his if it works. I'm also going to pull the plugs and manually check the compression of the cylinders....if good, might get a few bucks for it as a parts motor. Figured with what it needs (starter, wiring, lower unit) I'd be better off putting the repair money needed towards a newer 115 hp. Supposed to warm up some this week and if work schedule allows, hope to have motor off, cc off, and wiring pulled.

One other thing I forgot to add. The floor is not rotted, but will still be replaced. The reason of the soft areas is because the PO used 1/2" plywood...
