I have a 1978 140hp johnson outboard. Since i bought it a year ago it has never run well. It idles great, but as soon as I put it in gear it dies. After numerous tries it would go slowly but never develops any speed. Had all the electrical parts replaced and finally the motor rebuilt. Still the same problem. Removed the gas tank yesterday and will clean it and try it tomorrow with new fuel. When it is idling, cloudy liquid, like water, comes out of the carb. Any ideas?

Bree.... If you have a cloudy liquid flowing out of the carbs, obviously the carbs are flooding and require cleaning and rebuilding. Pertaining to the liquid, there should be nothing there at that point except the fuel/oil mixture.

Water is heavier than gas or oil. Put some of that liquid in a glass container. If there's water, it will be obvious at the bottom of the container.

Install a water/fuel filter to be on the safe side.
