We are looking for some advice with what has been a very reliable engine, and are hoping you guys can help. The engine has the electronic ignition and electric start. We have 3 wires that we can't remember where they go. There's a larger box(kind of looks like a brain box) and another smaller box(w/4 wires on it)right next to it that are on the very back of the engine. We don't know where 2 wires(black and red) that come from the little box, and the purple wire that comes from the larger box go. These wires are all wrapped together. We are not getting any spark. This engine was in good shape last year before we stored it. We are assuming these wires are important, but are flustered

We would really appreciate any help you could give :) Ken and Nancy Schlader

Re: 1978 20hp Chrysler-need help with wires

Welcome to Iboats MN Chrysler Lovers I was hoping someone else with more ignition and motor wiring would jump on this. I have a 67 45Hp Chrysler that also loves minnesota. I am from Blaine. Somewhere on your motor around the carb there should be a data plate. This plate should have your model number and your serial number. One of the numbers on the model number tells what kind of ignition system you have. Chrysler used quite a few. Reply to this post with your model and serial number and that will help someone here tell you where the wires go. I have digital photos of my motor and have some good shots of the wiring but this will not do you much good if your ignition system is different than mine.

I am hoping someone else will jump in here and help. If your motor is model number 202H9K it is a 1979 motor. What I am seeing on a parts list on the internet is that it has an alternator under the flywheel and is a magna power ignition. Problem is I cant find this ignition in my clymor manual. On your motor you have a terminal block that has a bunch of wires screwed to it. Can you post the wire colors from the top of this going down. Like 8 wires blue, black, purple, blue, green, etc. This will help me try and figure out what ignition you have. I can email you a picture of my engine. Sounds to me they may be similar. My email address is ralgoetz@aol.com. Hope someone else chimes in.

I was at a friends cabin two weeks ago in Deer River. We were in Grand Rapids for crazy days. I envy your living up there. It is a beautiful place.

Ken and Nancy...I'm gonna try to answer your question, but, I'm going from memory so double check what I am about to say...the blue wire from the cd unit goes to the blue wire from stator via a 2 wire plug, the plug has a yellow and a blue wire on both sides that match...black wire from rectifier goes to ground...red wire from rectifier goes to hot side of starter solenoid. I hope this helps...just a Thought

Re: 1978 20hp Chrysler-need help with wires

Well we still aren't sure about the wiring for this motor. We had the lower unit go on our other motor so had to work on the easier of our two boats---yuck! When it rains, it pours! The black and red wires look like they were originally taped together, and they come from the 1" x1" box on the back of the motor around the left side of the motor (as you are looking from the front of the motor). The wire we thought was purple or blue was taped on later and we still aren't sure about the color. We did get some spark from the plugs, but it is very faint. :( Any ideas? We changed the solenoid earlier this year so that seems an unlikely problem.
Ken and Nancy

Hello, we're wondering if these posts are being seen? Eurolarva, you asked for the wiring from top to bottom. There are 8 places:
1-yellow
2-purple (is this for the tachometer?)
3-white
4-green
5-orange
6-red
7-blue
8-black
Hope this helps! Like we said in the last post, we can't seem to get much spark from the plugs even though we got new ones for the motor?
Thanks, Ken and Nancy
PS...sorry there are more than one of the last post
