1978 235Hp (235840R) what kind of oil I need for lower unit and Trim??

:confused:HI:
I want to change the lower unit oil,
can I use SAE 90 from Autozone?
and I want to change Trim oil,
can I use power steering oil from Autozone?

The gear oil needs to be a marine oil. Car/truck oil won't do it. Marine gear oil is a hypoid oil which will mix with water and still maintain lubricating properties. Any Bombardier, Mercury or Yamaha marine gear oil should work. The specific OMC oil is the XPFR gear oil.

Keep in mind it will mix with water and retain it's properties, however it does not mean it's ok to continually have water mixed with it.

The reason I say this is because someone mentioned to me the other day that they had water getting into their lower unit but it was ok because they are using marine grade lubricant.....it won't make a leak "ok".
