1978 25hp forward gear and clutch dog question

For $200 I buy the complete parts motor hoping to find plenty of good parts.

Found a clutch dog on Ebay. Now just searching like mad for the forward gear. Plenty of reverse gears to be had. Guessing the use of reverse vs forward gear is why.

Is it possible to flip clutch dog and reverse the gears also on this year. Or does the dremel trick actually work. At least for a little while ?

Flipping the rears forward to reverse only works on a few motors.--------Yours is not one of them.

78 were specific to only a couple years if my memory serves me right, I think the 76,77,and 78 were the same, it was a problem on all of those engines. I believe you can bend the shift fork slightly to allow the clutch dog to stay engaged. Again if I remember correctly if you hold the gear shift solid they dont slip but if you let go of the throttle/gear shift it'll kick if out. Goodluck.
