I was replacing the water pump on my 1978, 35 HP Johnson. To get the impeller off the shaft I had to pull the drive shaft up and out of the lower unit. I can and have reinstalled the drive shaft into the lower unit so it connects to the pinion gear and will turn the prop in forward, reverse and disconnect in neutral- Normal operation. However the Seloc Manual says that if the drive shaft gets pulled from the lower unit, the entire lower unit must be disassembled so the drive shaft can be re-aligned wit the pinion gear. Is this correct based upon my above information?
