Hi all......first off, this is not my first boat, nor is the first time I've worked on engines, but this is the first outboard I've ever worked on. It's a 78 35hp evinrude and the first time I went to fire it up, I knew it had some problems. Here is a list of what I've already done....
1- installed new impeller kit
2- new exhaust cover gasket
3- replaced both ignition coils( old ones look like they were half melted)
4- new thermostat , seal , seal retainer and spring.
5- new head gasket
6- new spark plugs
7- re synced the ignition and carb
8- new solenoid
I got it all back together yesterday and it fired right up, something it's never done, ran great for about 2 minutes then it started to miss a little, then I noticed water coming from the top of the head gasket. Yes I did Torque the head in 3 steps to 192 inch lbs. and I'm sure the miss is from water getting into the #1
cylinder. So now my concern becomes a warped head or worse, a crack. My neighbor said to maybe use a sealer on the head gasket, but I've replaced many head gaskets and never had to do this. Is there some weird cork about these outboard that would justify using a sealer? I'm just hoping that you guys out there with alot more experience in these outboards can lead me in the correct direction....thanks
