1978 6hp evinrude no idle

I have a new carb, new spark plugs, water pump, points and condenser. The motor has been cleaned up, de carbed and all that fun stuff. The problem is it still wont idle down. If I go from WOT to idle it shuts off, then is a real pain to start again.

what else should I be looking at? fuel pump?

If it runs Ok at higher speeds then it is unlikely that the pump is faulty. It would not fail immediately anyway as it would run for a while on the fuel in the bowl. However try pumping the bulb, if that keeps it running maybe it is.

If you play with the choke can you keep it running. If so then the carb probably needs cleaning despite being new.

BUT is the slow speed mixture correctly set.

thanks. I didnt try adjusting the low speed mixture. I will take it out and give it a shot.
