I'm trying to remove all the long shaft parts so I can trade them in for the short shaft parts this Saturday morning. That's why I don't have time to order and wait for a shop manual before attempting this.

What are the secrets to getting the shift rod and copper water pump tube out of this motor? The lower unit is off. Does the lever assembly have to be removed from the top of the motor to remove the shift rod? Do I have to reach up inside with a special tool and pull the rubber grommet out with the water tube?

Thanks for your help!

If it is a motor that has been converted to long shaft in the field, you are in luck, it will have a 5" longer shift rod connector, easy swap for a short one.

However, if it is a factory long shaft, you will have to pull the powerhead to replace the upper shift rod.

The water tube merely pulls out of the upper grommet, same as the lower grommet in the pump. Oil it up before reassembly to make it slip in easier.

Saturday's a-coming----

Thanks FR. Yes, it is a factory long shaft. The water tube did come out last night. I tried removing the power head but one of the many small bolts was ready to twist off so I stopped there.

I'll cut 5" off the shift rod and groove it for the connector with the shift rod still in the motor. I should be able to use a pneumatic cut-off wheel but I'll have to be carefull. If I cut it too short or otherwise mess it up, I'll have to deal with that seized bolt to get it all apart.
