Moved up another decade in motor a couple weeks ago, picked up this motor on a new project Starcraft, going to give it a go at starting it up this weekend. Guy I bought it from said he had the whole thing gone through last season, by the looks of all the gaskets I can see externally they look like new and the engine looks pretty clean under the hood, outside is ugly as sin. Looks to me like its a differant lower end than original, motor should be all white, leg looks like that factory green color with black over the top that was painted on the boat.

Any opinions on these motors? Was also wondering if this will charge the battery unlike my '62 40hp?

Re: 1978 70hp Johnson

Hey mate congratulations on the new purchase, these engines are quite reliable and give minimal issues. I have a 1975 Evinrude 70hp. Did you check the compression before you bought it? if not do that first so you know what condition the engine is in. Secondly replace the water pump impeller and throw some new plugs in. Change the lower leg gear oil, visually inspect the coils to make sure there are no cracks (common) rebuild your carbs and you should be on your way.

Keep us posted on your progress. Good Luck!
