When turning the ignition switch to the off position the engine will not shut down. I replaced the ignition switch and the problem is still there.

To kill the engine I must push in the switch to ingage the choke and this will kill the engine.

My guess is that there is a wire disconnected somewhere but that is a guess.

All suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

The 1978 85hp has two powerpacks, so it's unlikely that the kill circuit has went bad in both of them.

On the back of the ignition switch, there is a black/yellow wire at one of the "M" terminals (kill circuit to packs). With an ohm meter check the continuity of that wire (disconnected from the switch) to the black/yellow wire you will find at the powerpacks.

There is either a break in that wire, or the small black ground wire from the other "M" terminal of the ign switch isn't grounded, either at the c/box or at the engine.

Thanks Joe I will check that out. But won't be able to for at least acouple days now.

I did have box open when I changed the ignition switch and there was one wire (can't remember the color but think it may have been gray) just laying there not connected to anything. It was not broken or anything it looked like it may hvae never been hooked up. But then I am not the first owner and I did find and old ignition switch in the boat so it has been cahnge at least once before me.

The gray wire you found probably goes to a tachometer.

c/6
Hooty
