1978 85hp Johnson - fuel filter?

My boat has a built in fuel tank and the plumbing goes to a fuel filter before connecting to the engine. The reserve tank which is just one of those portable cans doesn't have any external filter. Is it adviseable to keep the filter for the '78 Johnson 85hp outboard? Do they need to be replaced at any interval? If so what type?

Right. Mine doesn't have a fuel pump, just a priming bulb. The built in onboard fuel tank looks pretty simple, if there is a screen inside it can't be reached. Should I attempt to replace the old fuel filter?

The fuel pump is on the outboard. Look at the link from MarineEngines.com that is the fuel pump for your outboard.
