hey guys, i recently bought a boat with a 1978 Evinrude 140hp on it and I'm having issues. the first time starting up with the muffs it fired right up then took it to lake and it started up good. started out running 3/4 throttle till warm then pushed to full and it bogged and died. afterwards it wouldn't start with or without choke and warm up throttle starter would try and turn it over but wouldn't go sounded like dying battery but also was spinning hard like compression was too high. pulled the plugs and it was able cycle so wasn't locked up but put them back in and it wouldn't spin at all. thinking either the battery i have is getting weak or that I'm getting low volts to the starter or the starter doesn't have the strength to spin at the rpm needed. my other idea is that the carb needs rebuilding and needs a new reed valve for the problem of bogging at the top end of throttle.
any help is much appreciated and thank you to anyone who has any input in advance cheers guys.

could have been bad gas ... you should fully inspect the rig before assuming it was pampered. carbs could be plugged up etc... tank pick-up plugged up , bad venting, bad hose
did you check/replace gear oil ??

The first thing to do is a compression test on this 47 year old crossflow.----Post the actual values here.

it was new gas and mixed 50:1 ratio as the motor calls for that i forgot to add that it is a two stroke apologies for that. i have been working on it a bit before this situation i replaced fuel line from pump to carbs and cleaned the spark plugs after the first time on lake it didn't act like this but did die on top end that time ran around for a few hours without major issues. this was the second time out and i did the proper starting techniques didnt change anything besides fuel lines and clean plugs. new hoses are not kinked at all either

Spend no beer tokens until you determine condition of the outboard.----If all is well install a new impeller.----New diaphragm in fuel pump.----Make sure carburetor jets are clean.----You need a top notch / tested battery.-----Might as well take starter apart for inspection / cleaning.----Do an ohm test on the starter armature.----If flywheel spins too slow there will be no spark.

Some videos for the sound and speed of it trying to turn over. It almost started but lots of smoke and then died instantly. You could hear the rpm pick up a bit and then give a little more juice on the warm up lever and it would get a little faster but not kick over.

Pulled off air box and it started up easier ran it for the bit on the muffs. There was fuel in the air box but not an alarming amount. Will check compression cold tomorrow and bring numbers back. I want to believe it needs new floats and reed valve
