hey i have a '78 evinrude 35hp and i"m wondering if it would be possible to hook up gauges like temp, tach, etc.

What kind of gauges are you considering? You can always drill and tap for a coolant temperature sensor. A tachometer / hour-meter is easily added via a Tiny Tach www.tinytach.com. But as anything, the more you add the more likely it will fail down the road. Really good gauges are expensive so throwing a cheap Autometer gauge onto a boat just doesn't make sense IMHO... If your considering a voltmeter, be forwarned that most 70's outboards that charge a battery do so unregulated, so if you use an Automotive voltmeter it will more than likely have a red zone above 14 volts, unregulated marine charging systems usually charge @ over 15 volts at less than 10amps which is perfectly normal by design.

So if it were me, I'd pop on a Tiny Tach and be done with it...
