I have a 1978 Evinrude 55hp (I think, don't know where to look for the model number) and I changed the starter out to a generic starter from the auto parts store. I figured that it would do the same thing, start the engine. I also do not have a schematic for the engine and would like to ask anyone out there to look in their stack of old books and see if they might be able to help. I know electronics, but I do not know Outboard engines. I need a schematic for the starter circuit on this engine... Please Help!:confused:

you need the proper starter switch. standard auto switch, has accessories, off, on, start positions, in that order. outboard has off, on, start, and push in for choke.

Don't try to put an automotive solenoid in it either - automotive starter solenoids ground via the base and outboard solenoids don't.

I used the correct starter switch and it is running good.

Thanks for all of the help guys.

Since you guys are so helpful... I thought that you might like to take a try at my new problem:

The motor will run good when in neutral and the throttle is at 50%. I put it in the water and it felt like it was running on half power at full throttle. it is really rough with the throttle in idle even after letting it run and warm up for 30 minutes.

Any suggestions?

Check compression, spark. Spark should be sharp blue flame, jump a gap 1/2 or so.
