Can't move steering wheel. I removed the steering arm at the motor and motor turns freely. I can move the steering cable in the tilt tube, but can't remove. I understand motor has to be taken off boat. My question is -- do I have to replace the rack and the cable, or can just the cable be replaced. If so how do i get it off the rack. Thanks

Hi friendslake,

Just replace the cable. You may have enough room to slide the motor over to the side on the transom to remove the cable from the tilt tube. Works with some. Otherwise, off with the motor....

Some cables don't remove from the rack.it's all one piece.Generaly you can buy a kit that includes the cable as well as the helm.We do this so both parts are new and not miss matched.Additionally the kit is usually cheaper than the cable by itself. (go figure)

You can also install rotary steering instead of the rack.Just a bit easier to work with.
