1978 evinrude 9.9 tiller handle shifting problems

i put my 9.9 evinrude in forward and it now goes in reverse even though its in forward position. neutral is neutral still and it wont even go into reverse position. i have no idea. it ran perfect for two years and worked fine all that day that it went bad. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks

That problem is usually caused by someone attempting to shift into gear with the engine NOT running. This would cause one of the shift rods (upper or lower) to change position within the brass shift connector instead of having the groove of the rods aligned with the bolt hole of the shift connector.

Drop the lower unit to check that out.

thanks for the reply.is it right on top of the lower unit? if that is what happened whats my next step?
