1978 Evinrude gearbox oil leak

My 1978 Evinrude 15hp gearbox leaks. When I run it up oil leaks out the back of the prop. I need some kind of tool to pull the gear box out. I have a spare gearbox unit with exactly the same problem. While apart I'll replace both the seal under the water pump and the gearshaft seal at the same time. I have a manual but it's not exactly rocket science - looks pretty easy, except, how to pull it all out. Do I need a special tool or can I make one some how?

Getting that service manual will lead you in the right direction as far as the tools required to tear the lower unit down. It sounds like the lower unit will need a re-seal job.

Get a reseal kit for the engine and replace all of the seals, way cheaper than a a new lower.

I assume you are talking about the prop hub, after you get the 3 bolts out I have used a pair of Vice Grips attached to one of the supports and tapped it out, if you are lucky it will come out but I am in fresh water, salt can make it a bit harder.

You can buy slide hammers with a bunch of attachments and all you need is a hook to get in behind it and tap it out.

Good point - it's a 15hp - just edited the original post. I have a manual and there is a picture of some kind of puller but I can't see how it works. Does it push against the prop shaft? I have access to a lathe and could make something up - just can't get my head round it. I good picture of one would be best.

I have done a couple lowers and they usually just pop right out if you can get something behind them, of coarse if you can come up with a puller that si best.
