Hey everyone, newbie to the boat world. Quick question. Am I supposed to be able to raise my engine from the inside of the boat. It seams like it is impossible. Have to hop out to raise. Is there something that I can do for now without buying a power trim/tilt(plan on that next year)

THanks EZMOBEE. good information. engine is 70 hp. Do i need to replace the ram rods, or would that be a waste of money. With the link that you provided, it seems someone has come up with an answer for everything.

Tilt and trim has been a constant frustration for me. Evinrude/Johnson changed their trim mechanism design in 1978. Used trim systems for 1978 and newer motors can be had on eBay for around $200 and sometimes less. The older system that my '73 uses goes for well over $400 in often dicey condition. That's a bit beyond my budget for my old boat. Since you're right on 1978 I'd make sure that yours uses the new style and find a used one on eBay. It would be the great investment for you because it would make tilting so much easier and allow you to adjust your trim while running to optimize your performance.

By the way, the difference between the new and old style is the old style had the tilt rams mounted outside of the bracket and the new ones have the ram or rams mounted inside the bracket.

EZMOBEE,

thanks again for the great information. I have the newer design. I am going to go through and re lube everything on it. Can I purchase the tilt rams? But that is not the only problem that I am having. Finaly got my boat to the water and tried it for the first time. The engine is boging down (something fierce) Took carbs off and cleaned, but couldn't remove high speed jet, is stuck in bottom of bowl. I am ordering new bowls for all three carbs, and new kits for carbs, new fuel lines, and new fuel pump. I hope it works.

Well good luck on your running problems. As far as the tilt rams, do you mean the pressure assist manual ones? I think those are typically pretty expensive also. I would spend the $200 on a used power unit. However here's a cheap manual bracket with everything http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/EVIN...ryZ50442QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

But if this one fits it'd be money well spent http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/John...ryZ50442QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
