1978 Grew 14' Deck/transom repair

Hello everyone!

I have been out searching around and posting on the general boat topics (on iboats). I have decided to post up here as well and see if anyone can help me out! I have unfortunately purchased a big project. The PO had put particle board as the deck and the stringer isnt glassed over. Also the transom has been reinforced with angle iron. (which i didnt realize when i bought the boat was to cover up bigger problems) I will post some pictures of where i have found rot in the transom, and hopefully someone can tell me what i need to do next. I understand i have some big problems, and alot of work ahead of me but i am hoping it will be safe for me to use for the summer, and start working in the fall. I will be taking out ALL of the particle board on Monday, along with the stringers, and reglassing the hull and replacing the deck. I have ordered the book by Jim Anderson, Runabout Renovation, so hopefully with help from iboats and the book i can figure this out!

Take some more pics once the deck comes up. The 2x4 in the pic is not the stringer. The stringer is under the deck and I doubt you will be able to see it until the deck comes up. I would guess that the motor flexed the transom and cracked it due to the rot, or the clamps were tightened down on rotten wood and cracked it. Either way this is not an insurmountable project, you can do it.

That sounds a bit easier, I was not sure how to re-size image so I just wanted to play it safe! Thanks Everybody!
