I have a 1978 johnson 140hp lower unit seems to shift into gear but the motor does not push the boat very well. The best way I can discribe it would be like a clutch in a car slipping. At low rpm's the boat goes.
Next question I have a 1975 evinrude 115 with a blown powerhead will the 140hp powerhead fit on this tower and lower unit?
Thanks any help would be greatly apprieciated.

You probably have a spun prop, B2F.

Good luck. :)

Ditto on the spun hub in the prop. Thats assuming its not a 20" motor on a 25" transom.

Yes the newer powerhead will bolt on the older mid section. You have to relocate 4 bolt holes (2 on each side).

Good luck!

I don't think it is the prop the prop is a solid hub stainless steel type thanks for the info I will fist try another prop before I replace the lower unit.

Born2Fish.... There is no such thing as a solid hub stainless steel prop unless you are using a inboard prop or a special racing prop on that engine. All props have a outer shell made of either aluminum or stainless steel, setting over a bronze hub, and between the two is vaulcanized rubber.

Sort of what you would see on a automotive type motor mount. This is a common place design to absorb shock. Without this design, there would be a tremendous amount of broken propshafts.

JB and Dhadley have it pegged I do believe.
