My 78 johnson starts fine everytime i take it off the trailer and run for a bit, the problem is when i shut it off for just a bit to do something in never wants to or has trouble starting up again. Is this a simple problem to fix with a simple tune up or is it more complicated that that?

Re: 1978 johnson starting problems

Years ago, I did have the same problem with my 20HP mariner. When it was cold, it was very easy to start. And if I stopped the motor, it was very easy to start again. But if I waited to start the motor again after apx. 5-10 min. it was very hard to start. That was going on for apx. 3 month. But after I changed the plugs, the problem was gone ???
How old is your plugs ?

JD,

First thing would be be to check the spark on both cylinders, spark should be strong, blue and snappy and arc about 1/2", weak yellow or no spark needs further troubleshooting. Also inspect the ign coils and wires for any signs of cracking etc. Inspect the stator located under the flywheel for any signs of cracks or sticky, syruppy substance dripping off.

Let us know the results.
