I leave mine in neutral. Remove bolts around the edge. Also remove the trim tab. There is a bolt under there.

I understand from reading about other people's woes that you might have a problem if your particular engine has seen a lot of salt water use.

Seems that corrosion causes the driveshaft to stick in it's splines up at the powerhead connection.

There have been some nasty posts here about all the methods used to free things up; seems like "it ain't pretty"

I wouldn't know firsthand...my 1977 '85HP is a freshwater motor...everything comes apart just fine.

You should be able to just loosen all the bolts...keep looking...a couple are a bit hidden...and the LU will just slip right on down.

Thanks for reading, Chuck

if we were in the market for the manual which probobly cost $$$ we'd buy it. But there is this really cool online site called iboats.com, maybe you've heard of it. it is a forum that helps those who could use a little extra help without spending the money for the shop manual. d/*a

thanks for your post. you have to realize 4 years later i saw this and it will help me with my situation. Someone once called this part of the motor the "Zink Anode": Laymans terms trim fin. Peace

The proper name for the solid zinc fitting that bolts on behind the prop on Mercs is "Zinc Anode". Zinc Anodes help reduce galvanic action that destroys aluminum parts.

There are at least three kinds of Merc anodes you may use in that spot. One has a full fin, one has a half fin for raked props and one has no fin for props with extra rake. The zinc anodes with fins can assist in reducing the effort necessary to steer the boat.

A trim tab is a stainess plate the bolts to the edge of the transom and deflects water downward to help a boat plane. They are installed in pairs and are electric, hydraulic or spring powered.

Sorry to be a PIA, but it helps to call something by it's real name.
