I have a 1978 merc 175 hp. It has not been run for a couple of years. I have tried to start it and cannot get it to fire. It appears that there is no spark. Does anyone have any suggestions on the source of the problem or a means to figure out the problem?

Wpannkuk

Re: 1978 Merc v6 ignition trouble

There are a number of reasons why it may not have spark.

First check battery connections..see if they are tight and that you have atleast 12.6 volts at the battery.

Ign switch..switchboxes..stator..trigger are the likely candidates.

If you d/c the yellow and black wire at the switchboxes, you can take the ign switch out of the equation.

It is rare for the trigger to take out all 6 cyls. <---this can be more or less ruled out.

That leaves us with 2 alternatives. Stator or Switchboxes.

Without a DVA tester, you will be guessing at the problem.

:(

Wish I could be of more help.

TMD
