Normally those MerControls have a 3 pin connector to power gauges, including the tachometer. Look for a round rubber plug on the front of the controller. It will have 3 slots that will accept male spade connectors. The horizontal one is for the tach signal.

can a tach, any old tach work, on this?

You will have to have a tach that is made to work on the motor. You can check the Faira or Telaflex web sites for info as to what will work. There is also cheap small tachs that can be bought that will work ,but the wires for them are rather short. For indash mounting it would be better to spend the extra $ for a tach that is made for your motor. The wiring harness for your contro to dash can be bought fairly resonable, and is often sold on Ebay.
