Hi, I have a 1978 or somewhere around there Chrysler 115. My reverse is shot, grinds and doesn't engage. I think I found the gears on ebay, but he asked if its a 1 or 2 piece lower unit...It looks like one, 6 bolts facing up, 3 on each side...but I'm new to this, so not sure. If anyone knows, please help me!!!! Let me know if you or someone you know can get me the right part also...would much appreciate it

1978 was just around the time that Chrysler developed the one piece lower unit. Does the prop have a thrust pin? two piece props were located by a thrust pin. Just count the splines on the prop shaft. 18 splines is a two piece and i5 splines is a one piece. All lower units have a seventh bolt hidden inside the exhaust snout.

If you are only going to replace the reverse gear and/or dog clutch, that's OK If you also need to replace the forward gear then don't bother. buy another used lower unit. It requires special tools to correctly shim the pinion and forward gear. If not done correctly the gears will self destruct, wasting a lot of time and money.
