Ive got a 1978 Skeeter SS-1 Fisherman with a 1998 Evinrude 90 HP outboard on it I was thinking about restoring.

Is there anyone on here that has restored a SS-1 Fisherman ??? If so do you have any tips/tricks/photos to share?

How do I go about budgeting the $$$ for the fiberglass and paint job?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 1978 Skeeter SS-1 Resto ???????????

Hey Skeeter,

I'm from Oz so I don't know the type of boat an SS-1 is. But..since you need to know about fibreglass I assume it is a GRP hull.

I just spent the last 2,5 years restoring my boat and replcing the transom (never again)

GRP boats used to be made (maybe some still are) from Polyester Resin, these days companies are using Vinyl Ester Resin as it's water proof where the old polyester isn't.

To repair or replace bits you need to use Epoxy Resin. Polyester (which is what you find in most repair kits) does not bond to cured polyester as well as epoxy and it does not produce the same strength. The type of glass matting you use is lso important. I used woven matt. Chopped matt has powder that stops / hinders the epoxy setting up properly.

If you visit the International Paint site it has a whole lot of products that are great for doing restore jobs. It hs alot of really good info.

I used their paints but I used a different brand of resin.

What type of repairs are you planning on doing?

I can't tell you how much to budget for but I will say this. Fixing a boat is a black hole. All I had to do was replace my Transom, but since i was in the area....you get the picture. What I thought was going to cost around $700.00ended up over $4000.00

I never documented the build. Took couple of photos but nothing specific.

Cheers
