I have a 1979 Mariner 140 and its not charging the battery. I have the Clymer manual and I have checked all of the connection and they all look good. I have a fluke 85 III multimeter and I have checked the continuity on the stator and that looks good. On the rectifier I'm a little confused, on how to test it. The manual states the following:

1. Set the ohmmeter on the rX1,000 scale. ( I can't do that with the fluke- maybe I need a different meter.
2. connect the red lead to terminal D, the connect the black lead to A, B & C the meter should show continuity. (D and A are the same terminal post according to the picture in the book.)
4. connect the black lead to terminal D, the connect the black lead to A, B & C the meter should show no continuity.

My questions is can my meter test like this. It's doesn't care which lead I use its just looking for continuity.

According to the book I have a diode type rectifier.

Anyone test this before?

I believe this covers your rectifier.

Testing Merc?s square rectifier
If you use an analog meter set it on the RX1000 scale.
If using a digital meter, set it on the diode symbol.
1. Disconnect the battery leads.
2. Disconnect all wires on the rectifier.
3. Connect the red test lead to ground and the black lead alternately to terminals A and C.
The meter should show continuity.
4. Connect the black lead to gound and the red lead alternately to terminals A and C.
The meter should not show continuity.
5. Connect the black lead to terminal B and the red lead alternately to terminals A and C.
The meter should show continuity.
6. Connect the red lead to terminal B and the black lead alternately to terminals A and C.
The meter should not show continuity.
7. Replace the rectifier if you do not get correct readings.

Thanks bhile, will test it today. I sure that my problem. According to my manual it's only 3 pieces in the system.

Re: 1979 140 HP Charging issue

I tested the stator and rectifier and tey passed according to the step I followed in the manual. My battery still isn't charging. Does any one know what voltage I should get if I test the A/C output coming out of the stator? Testing on the DC side with the engine running I'm not shoowing any charge. I test at the pos. and neg. inside the motor to eliminate any wiring going back to the battery. I was talking with a boat owner today and he told me to test what the stator was putting out, he said since that boat setup it could have rust on the magnets under the fly wheel and the stator would not put out the correct amount of AC power to the rectifier and therefore that could provide the nessary DC volts to charge my battery. Any help or advice would be helpful.

Also how hard is it to pull the flywheel and repace or clean the stator if that is my problem.

Thanks
