I recently bought a 1979 Johnson V6 150 and could not get it to run . It turns over great ,but will not stay running. Ive rebuilt the Carburators (3). replaced the bulbed fuel line. Replaced both fuel filters. Where is the vent located in most tanks.

Proper carb cleaning includes jet removal and proper cleaning of all the carb passages with a pressurized can of carb cleaner. Using starting fluid to start is not a good idea. It has no lubricating properties, like the normal fuel mixture in the tank. When you get the engine running, try squeezing the fuel primer bulb repeatedly. This will force fuel arround the fuel pumps, directly into the carb bowls. If the engine will stay running by constantly priming the fuel hose bulb, then you may have weak fuel pumps.

I replaced the fuel pumps and still have the same problem. If I choke the motor it will run but it's rough.

When you crank the engine over, do the plugs get wet? If the plugs are not wet, you are not getting fuel. If they are, you are getting fuel, but you may not have good spark. Check for proper spark on all 6 cylinders.

To clarify "good spark" means it should jump 7/16th inch,
not 1/8th inch spark plug gap.

You could have poor spark but it'll fire with ether because the btu is higher vs gas.

Thank you for your response , (emdsapmgr) the plugs are not getting wet. I try to prime it with the bulb ,but the bulb getts hard and it seems like it passes no fuel; should I be able to see the fuel pump in ,when i pump the bulb??

Make sure the arrow on the bulb is going in the direction of the fuel flow. It is not uncommon for the ball valves in the bulb to fail and cause flow problems. If you have another fuel line, try it. I eliminated the clip-on hose connections at the lower cowl. Ran the supply hose end through the (new) cowl opening, direct to the fuel pump. When you do that and expose the hose end, it should flow a lot of fuel when you prime the bulb. Knowing the hose will flow fuel, clamp it direct to the pump. Make sure it does not kink and cause restrictions. When you prime the bulb, you should hear fuel entering the carb bowls. When they fill up, the hose bulb will get hard. Make sure the electric solenoid is activating the choke plates on the bottom two carbs. If they are not closing when you push in on the key, it will be a bear to get started. If, after all this, you have no fuel to the plugs, you will probably need to get into the carbs and have a look.

I rebuilt all three carbs and replaced the upper and lower fuel pump. when I prime with the bulb I can hear the fuel going in the carb bowls and bulb getts hard. Thats about as far as I get .

Sounds like you have done all the right things on the fuel side. Have you checked the spark on each plug wire with an iductive timing light or a spark checker?
