Hello guys, I am new to the forum here and looking to start a partial resto on a 1979 21' mariner. Going to make an offer this weekend but not really sure what it is worth and I know there is a ton of knowledge here. It has a running 1981 90 hp mercury, fish finder, new transom, newer floor, newer vinyl inside. Has the original roller trailer, bilge pump, battery. It has a slight crease in the rear side of the boat and a dent under the bow not very big though. Will be fixing rivits painting the boat and making it my own. My main question is what is it worth? I cannot findnany fornsale to compare. Any help is greatly appreciated thanks in advance guys!

:welcome: Joe. It depends on a lot of items, where you are located, can make a huge difference in what it is worth. Pictures would help us a lot to see condition. Make sure the new floors are not pressure treated ply and that the new floors are not just screwed over the rotten existing one. The O/B will have to be run on muffs and a compression test done to see what it is like, also that 90 will make that boat on the underpowered side by a considerable amount.

Thanks for the welcome dozer! Unfortunately I do not have any pics and his ad has expired. If this boat needed a full restoration down to yhe hull what should I look to pay roughly I know its tough without pics. He is asking 1200.00 for the rig. I am in Ohio

IMHO $1200 would be top of the range, that's a big boat and comes with the associated big costs for restoration, lots of ply, epoxy or spar, vinyl and so on. Unless your planning on trolling lots and going fairly slow the 90 will probably need a larger replacement, but if it is in good shape it is a popular size and would be an easy sell, to help fund a larger O/B. Is the trailer in good usable condition? If you have to buy tires, bearings light etc, that will lower the price as well.

I agree it will need repowering. I may even be able to buy it less the engine. Trailer is in decent shape. If the transom is good and he did tell me it was marine plywood, and the floor is good is it then worth the asking price? Why are these boats so hard to find? Or am I just looking in the wrong places?

No, they're getting harder to find. And when they are hard to find and you like them, they are worth what you are willing to pay ;)

Your general location will help alot in the pricing. A Boats value is based soley on the condition, and comparable market. Could be anywhere from $700 to $3000

If at all possible try not be emotionally attached. It will help you in negotiating a price and not being disappointed as you go through the rebuild. There are other boats out there. I suck at negotiations, try to look at the boat as a complete bust if you were to get into it, what could you get out of it if you wanted or needed to flip it right away. That plus or minus a couple hundred is where I would try to be. That being said sometimes you just ''roll the dice''. Good luck!

Unless you're concerned he might steal the 21ft out from under you (not likely given the 'stealth' Chieftain), might PM bcg & see what he's up to Sat..............

Good luck

It's in your blood now, you will now be drawn to tin boats like my Admiral to a shoe sale :D

See the '79 brochure.

4 strakes instead of 2. The outer one comes close the the spray rail where it terminates at the bow.

the mob gets a little light-headed (and drools a little bit) when we see V5's

The 90 Merc is the same one I run on my 19 foot tin Spectrum, and while it's decent, I think it tops out at 30 mph. The good news is it could be worth a good chunk of what he's asking. Or if it checks out, and speed isn't an issue, you might just run it. Depends what the boat needs to be honest, good luck with your search.

I think 1200 is a decent starting price based based on what you know currently. Devil is in the details

I see you are from Mi Greenbush that is where the boat is. We were considering a trip to the mall and bass pro afterwards. I'm almost positive I will re power it but will t try and get what I c an out of the outboard

Good luck, Northern Ohio is going to be getting the same weather we are this weekend. Less then ideal for project boat shopping.... But that might be in your favor. Perhaps you'll be the only interested party.

Just be sure you're comfortable w/ what you pay and anything that isn't as good to go as you thought when you get it home.
