1979 35 hp eivnrude will only run at wot with hood off

Can't figure out what's wrong
Could it be a fuel issue? I've checked all lines and replaced the inline filter

I've checked the power head gasket and no leaks

Not sure where else to check?

If you're running this thing in a barrel, sit a fan in from of the engine to prevent the induction of exhaust gases. :tickled_pink:

Ya know,I seen an evinrude do that same thing this summer! 70 hp. New fuel lines,new fuel,and filters,new pump,still does it.still don't know what it is.Take the hood off and it'll run fine across the lake. I think the hood was changed at some point in its life and now it can't get enough air.If you figure it out let me know!

I had a 79 35 a number of years ago. Can't remember just how the fresh air gets into the cowling. You can check two things: 1. air may come into the cowling at the top, back, where the handhold is on the upper cowling/cover. 2. If that is complelely sealed off, then check under the bottom of the carb-in the lower cowling. There should be an air vent there-it could get restricted and block airflow to the carb.

I think there has to be a exhaust leak under the hood somewhere.
Its highly unlikely that it is lacking air intake.Use a small piece of hose as a stethoscope see if you can hear
the exhaust leak.It appears that it may not leak much at slower speeds.

i had the same problem with my 1985 J140 two summers ago. it turned out to be my power pack... motor would run great, get warmed up & lose power & quit running. take the hood off & it would run great. replaced the powerpack & have not had the problem since...
