I bought a 79 bass tracker a year ago and the previous owner was working on the motor, but had not fixed it completely. He put in new motor berrings himself. I made the repairs to the carb and starter after I bought it. It starts and runs, but this afternoon during a water test iI discovered that forward is reverse and reverse is forward. I know that all components on the boat and engine are origional (no swapping of lower unit or components). I had a theory that ,in haste, he reassembled the motor and crossed the linkage cables. Is this likely, or is there some other option I haven't looked into? I have noticed that both cable hook-ups are different.Thankyou.

Two possibilities...

Somebody had the gearcase apart and put the shift cam in upside down, or...

Shift cable isn't connected correctly in the remote control. Many can be connected for throttle and shift to operate in opposite directions for varying applications.

I can't think of any other way. Unless it's somehow a counterrotational prop. I don't think any exist for that motor.

When it is, what should be forward, it does rev up high and the motor jumps out of the water. In the reverse position it will go forward, but a slow as it would when it is in reverse. Thank you for your help, too.

Ok, how do you take off these cables to swap them? Please help. I am on vacation and it is almost over, I would like to enjoy a little of what I have left of my vacation on the water. Thank you, sorry for the sound of desparation but I am!!!
