1979 70 hp Johnson -- pulling driveshaft from LU

Ran into rocks, and LU starting making unhappy noise and producing metal shavings. Swapped it with a used unit from ebay a couple years ago, and am now trying to get the original back in shape. So far (prop shaft carrier and reverse gear removed), the gears look fine, so I'm thinking the problem may be bearings.

Anyway, I've removed the pinion gear nut and need to pull the driveshaft from the LU. Aside from ordering the special tool, is there a good way to pull it? I've seen on this forum folks clamping it between blocks of wood and using a jack but in one instance that bent the shaft -- not what I want to do!

Any help very much appreciated. Thanks!

Re: 1979 70 hp Johnson -- removing pinion nut

I did this about 2 weeks ago on my old lower unite. It was perfect until it skipped a gear because the lower drive shaft bearing had to much slack, causing it to skip a gear and nuke just about everything.

Space is tight, so i started with the gear set.
I had to pull the forward and reverse gears first. There's this little pin that needs to slide out of the clutch dog. It has a snap ring around it to prevent it from falling out, remove that.
"DONT" try and press it completely downward in the slot in the lower unite where the oil drain plug goes. there's not enough room and you'll have push it back up, which is very difficult because the propeller shaft and the clutch dog are no longer aligned.

Pock it from above so that it sticks out a little at the bottom(6 oclock) and then rotate(12 oclock) the propeller shaft and pock it from below so that it pops out from above.

Not sure if this is the right way, but once gearset is out, it gave me room to remove the pinion gear and nut.

Someone with more experience will probably chime in to.
