1979 85 HP Johnson coil breaking

I have had 3 coils in a row break just below where the spark plug boot connects, I replaced plug wire, cleaned ground, engine runs great until coil breaks, What could be causing this??? maybe power pack??

The 1979 OE coils did not have boots; what kind are you using?

My guess is that they were already cracked and opened up when heated.

who ever had the motor before me must have changed to the newer style coils...I found the problem, the cowl latch was pressing in between the coil and the boot, I flipped the coil over so that the boot is facing away from the motor..resolved problem. Thanks for the input Ezek. Have a great day
