1979 85 hp

I have a 1979 85 hp Chrysler outboard that I just received with gears gone in the lower leg. I am trying to figure out how the main shaft comes out. have the water pump and plates all removed. should I be taking the prop shaft out as well.


thanks this is my first boat so learning new things

You need to remove the propshaft.
You should get a manual and the parts diagram.
They are fairly straight forward but can have a few points that can stump you.

Do yourself a favor and look for a good used lower unit on ebay. Gears are usually the first thing to go and are difficult to fine. New, they are vey expensive. By the time you buy the gears, possible bearings, and seals, you have paid more than a used lower unit will cost. And, you have don a lot of messy work.

However, if you mean that it is slipping out of gear and the dog clutches are worn, THAT is an inexpensive repair. It just takes some time and skill.

But yes, in either case you must completely disassemble the lower unit including removing the water pump and associated parts, drive shaft, and pinion gear.
