Good morning all. I have a checkmate mx-16 with a 85 hp evinrude. It runs beautifully and with me and my hunny in, it will run low 40s properly trimmed. Last night it was running about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. I barley got it up to 27mph. Before I took it out I sprayed carb clean in the carbs, changed the oil in the lower unit and trim oil. It will throttle up 100% in nuteral. Could I have used the wrong lower unit oil? Any ideas? Thank you...

You might start with some simple checks to see if you are running on all cylinders, spark and compression.

Do the compression check first and go from there.

I will have to go buy a gauge to do a compression test. If it was loosing compression would it still rev all the way up in neutral?

no it is not the lower unit oil. check and clean all grounds. check for spark at all cylinders. start with basics. but no it is not the oil.

It probably would but you're not supposed to rev them over 2000 rpm in neutral. Unless you want a rod or some internal part to come out and say HI!!

I bought a gauge. The left cylinders are at 110psi and the right cylinders are at 105 psi. I replaced the spark plug wires and she's running beautifully once again. The wires are pretty coroded. I will keep the Rpms under 2000 in nuetral. Thank you for all help and happy boating.
