i have a 1979 evinrude 150 on my bass boat. it has 110#s of compression on all cylinders and the carbs look s if they were just built, took all 3 of them apart. rebuilt the top fuel pump(only the top becaus i didnt get my other kit in) and it seemed to crank better but the black filter cover doesnt seem to seal good and its leaks a VERY small amount of fuel but it did seem to crank a little better. when the motor does crank it seems to run fine( nosputtering and or surging like a fuel issue). and i have checked the choke flaps they are both closing fully. just wondering if im missing something.

thanks in advance for any help

If you have any fuel leaking out, you also can have air leaking in. Not good in a fuel system. If you can't tighten the knurled screw on that black round fuel pump cap to keep it from leaking, replace the cap and/or the gasket. All that aside, I'll agree that this engine is not the easiest to start. My overhauled stock 79 200 always seemed temperamental when starting. I always attributed it to the fact that only 2 of the 3 carbs had choke butterflys. Keep in mind that all the original fuel lines in that engine were not made to handle today's ethanol fuels. You may want to consider replacing them with new. Also, that year the factory used tywraps around all the fuel hose connections. Over time, they tend to loosen as the hoses age. Consider replacing them with the newer solid plastic hose clamps that Bombardier sells. That engine has good (normal) compression.

Just for the heck of it try trimming your mtr all the way IN, pump the primer bulb and try starting it.

Well I got both fuel pumps rebuilt and got all the leaks stopped but it still seems to lean sneeze when trying to crank. It will spin over and hit and die at the same time. And now has an issue where when u get it running wot it runs good then its like you turned the fuel off to it????

At full throttle, possible the engine is draining the fuel out of the bowls faster than the pumps can replace it.
Are both pumps the correct factory ones? It takes two, of different part numbers. Check for a fuel restriction, perhaps in the anti-siphon valve is sticking..

Yes they are both the factory pumps I just rebuilt what was there. It didnt start doing this until I built the bottom pump and it seems just as hard as ever to crank still in the mid rpms it seems to run great it jumps outta the hole and runs on up then it gets up to about 51-5200 rpms and its like you cut the key off and then it comes back on is own?

One thing I forgot to add was I had my buddy lay on the back deck while I was running andwhen it started to act up he could pump the ball and it would run good dont know if that makes a difference

A good test of the fuel delivery system: constantly prime the fuel hose bulb. That will force extra fuel around the fuel pump bladders directly into the carb bowls. You confirmed it runs better while doing that. That means your engine is starving for fuel at high rpm's. Those same double fuel pumps will keep a 235 running just fine, so the setup will work for you on your 150.

Does it sound like I might just need to rplace those fuel pumps? Ive been told that rebuilding those pumps is not a good idea that I should just replace them ?

Re: 1979 evinrude 150 hard to start

im HAVING A SIMILAR PROBLEM with my 79 85 hp evinrude, started up ran fine than nothing, when i sprayed fuel into the carbs it started and ran until the fuel was gone. I pulled off the fuel pump and brought it to the local marina and he said that the (DIAPRAM), which is the rubber gasket inside the pump, it tends to wear out streches out of shape after a while. We are talking about a diapram that may or may not have been in since 79...... I opted to order the whole unit complete frrom evinrude, 96.00 + shipping.. I hope this will solve my problem. The marina also suggest to drain the fuel and start from scratch (can't hurt )and to add( ENZYME FUEL TREATMENT) FOR the CRAP, OOPS***** GAS that we all have to be subjectd tooo......... would like to no how you make out with this....

Local, ive already built both of my pumps and I know im fixing to get banned for this but im gunna try an electric fuel pump before I buy two new pumps and see if that fixes it. If it runs fine on that if so im gunna go back and replace both my pumps with new pumps

Instead of posting your issue on multiple threads of other people post start a new thread specifically for your motor and issue, this is the second time in 3 minutes it has popped up dealing with a different motor and owner.

Bombardier does not make rebuild kits for the fuel pumps on your engine. Maybe that says something.
