Okay so I picked up this little motor from a family member. I started it in a barrel and it ran fine. What I DIDN'T know was this was a dual air/water cooled engine. It started smelling really hot and at about the same time I went to shut her down, it shut off on its own. Let it cool all night and would not start this morning. I just did a compression test and only got 30 lb of pressure, and it built really slowly, taking about 6 pulls to get it to 30. I am new to all of this so bare with me here. Is that a signs of bad rings? I have good spark and fuel. What kind of project am I looking at to replace the rings and probably the piston? Would it be better just to grab another motor on craigslist to avoid a huge hassle? On another topic, once I found out that it has a waterpump and impeller, I pulled off the lower unit and attempted to remove the waterpump housing. The screws are so old and crusted over that I don't think there is anyway to get them out. Any of you experienced guys have a trick for this? I am stuck on this. This boat/motor was my grandfathers so I would like to keep it around so that's the only reason I am even considering it. Much thanks.

Find and post the model number. It's a nightmare - sounds like it overheated and seized. 30 psi does not sound good for the condition of the top end. If you're going to try to do the water pump, it's housing is usually retained by a couple of nyloc nuts on studs. Put the penetrating oil to it, let it sit a day or two, and go for it. I might pump some penetrating oil into the plug hole in the wan hope that maybe the rings are just stuck in the grooves from fuel/oil cookin' in there, then see if you get some compression back. The problem is that the lower crank seal gets hot and shrinks, then you got no vacuum on the upstroke and can't pull fuel thru the reeds. There ought to be an aluminum tag on one of the reed plate bolts that has a Tecumseh model number on it. I know a guy that has probably got the last pristine factory boxed AV817 in the world, and he's looking to sell it. PM me if you're interested.
