I have a 79 115 Johnson that I have had for 1 year. Has ran great but I am starting to have a couple of concerns.

1.) On my last 5 or 6 trips, after warming up, coming out of the hole and on plane for about 20 secounds, the motor shuts down on power where as it sounds like it is running on maybe 2 of the 4 cylinders. I bring throttle back to neutral rev up and take off again with out any problem. Can make several stops during a days fishing and will never experience this problem again. On my last trip, just before getting to the dock and at 3/4 throttle, it wanted to power down again but it did not. It also did not try to power down at the beginning on my trip on that occasion. I have had discussions about this and replaced my fuel line with a new hose and the bulb stays hard after pumping it. No other apparent fuel leaks. I'm concerned this could be a power pack problem. Is this a possible sign of a power pack problem? Is there a test I can run. I only have a basic volt meter.

2.) Three trips ago, I experienced a little plumbing problem with my live wells and flooded the back compartment to where the water was over the junction box in back. Fixed pluming issue but did not take the tank out to get to the junction box and dry everything inside. Here is what has happened since.

2.a ) Two trips ago coming back and just before I get to the dock I hear a noise. I shut down the engine and i can hear the starter just a spinning. I shut down engine and starter still engaged. I disconnect negative grown and it stops. I reconnect negative ground and the motor tries to start as soon as I touch the termnal to the battery. I disconnect negative and after 10 minutes or so the problem goes away and on my last trip there was no sign of this problem.

2.B ) My last trip to the lake. Started warmed up and just before planing the hot horn came on. continuious. Shut down engine. Trolled back to dock. Keep checking engine by turning key on and the horn keep buzzing. After 10 minutes the horn did not come back on. Did a check on the motor by touching and nothing was hot at all. As a matter of fact, everything was cool to the touch. Pee hole was working great the whole time as well. Re started the motor and ran across lake with no horn warning afterwards.

Although P Hole is streaming water I guess I need to change the water pump as it has been 3 to 4 years.

Could the flooded junction box be causing the last 2 issues? Any comments greatly apprec iated.

Re: 1979 Johnson 115 Several Concerns

The junction box is related to the power trim & tilt unit only and is completely seperate system from the ignition/starting circuit. Might have a key switch that is starting to go bad.

The momentary shut-down may be one of the powerpacks starting to go. If it does it again, try shutting it down, then checking the plugs. The plugs that were firing should be dry and light brown. The plugs that weren't might be damp and darker. If it's the pack, the plugs on one side will be the indicators. Check all the wiring between the coils and power packs, as well as the pack ground wires. If the motor is starting to overheat, some wires may have been melted a bit and grounding out periodically.

The tell-tale water only tells you that it is pumping. It does not tell you that the water is circulating properly. Might be worthwhile to check the thermostats. A manual is a must...
