1979 Johnson 25 model number 25EL79R

Slipping out of gear when accelerating. If you idle or a little above it will stay. Problem is intermittent. Check the fluid in the lower unit and it shows signs of water... Is it very difficult to change the clutch dogs and gears and obviously seals in the lower unit?

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like the worn clutch dog symptom. The only real fix is new clutch dog and gears. Might be able to turn the clutch dog around, then would pop out of reverse, but that might cause the dog to wear faster, due to worn drive gears.
Good used gears show up on eBay, but they are few and far between. Be careful of buying. Insist on pics of everything.
Don't ask how I know.

Are you a ham? N9TNL here.
