1979 Johnson 25 hp - No Kill button

Hello All,

I just picked up a 1979 johnson 25 hp with electric start. It has the batties cables coming out the front of the motor next to the choke nobe is. I started the motor up today, and it runs very well for being sitting for three years in a barn. My question is how do I kill the motor? My 73- 20hp pull start has a kill button on the front, this one does NOT. I have attached some pic's of the motor to help.

Please let me know....

Sooner or later it's bound to run out of fuel, it'll stop then. :D

Isn't that a kill switch on the side of the engine in your second photo?

I know that, the burron on the side is the starter button....Once I get it started, how do I shut it down??

Someone with that motor will probably chime in pretty soon. I also thought that the button on the port side was the kill switch. I thought that the electric starts from around that time, all used key switches. Is it possible that a PO added the electric start and re-purposed the kill switch from giving a momentary ground to the power pack, to giving a momentary 12v to the starter solenoid. He may have been killing by choke.

Just out of curiosity I looked at the online parts diagram (shop2.evinrude.com) and they call it a "shorting switch", so yes, this theory makes sense. Also, I have a mid 70's Merc and its' kill switch looks a lot like that, so apparently that was how it was done on that vintage engine.

That diagram also has a key switch shown on it. Maybe somebody converted it from tiller to remote and back to tiller and just made due with the shorting switch?

I just added a safety switch to my 86 9.9. Really easy to do on the CDI (power pack) motors. You had to pop the flywheel off of the older points/magneto motors to wire in a kill switch.

Anyway, find the two gray wires (could also be gray with yellow stripe), one comes out of the power pack connector, the other runs to a ring terminal that is grounded, usually on a coil bolt. The gray wires then run to the front of the motor to the installed kill button. On yours the button should have been a large black rubber button (my original switch was at the end of the tiller). I bought a safety switch here at the iBoats store (made by Sea Dog Line) for $10. I drilled a hole (5/8") in my front panel, installed the switch, and spliced a 2nd set of wires into the original wires.

That switch has 2 configurations, normally closed and normally open (with the lanyard clipped in). The normally closed set is for larger boats with a 12 Volt starting/ignition systems. The normally open terminals are the one you want to use. Grounding the power pack kills the spark.

Hopefully the wiring is still there to be able to put a switch in.
