1979 Johnson 85h V4 will not idle with warmup lever down

Good Afternoon, I removed my carbs of my Johnson v4 and have them back on. Fired her up but I am still running into same problem as last year it will start up with the idle warm up lever , but when I pull the lever down the idle drops to below 500 per my tach and stalls. Is there is simple idle adjustment to bump it up a little? The only thing I see is the timing bump stop adjustment.

I pulled the carbs off cause the boat sat for about 12 years in my Father in laws garage and figured it wouldnt hurt.

you can turn the throttle trunion to get it to idle higher.

Have you checked the compression on it??

I will check the compression tomorrow, kind of afraid what I may find I guess. Been sick as hell since I started this thread.

When checked compression, done a complete link and synch with pick-up timing, remove the throttle cable, then adjust idle, with boat in water, with screw #75.

I have the exact same problem on my 76 johnson 85hp. I did just as the people above stated (removed cable, adjusted idle screw, and turned truition knob) and got it to where it would crank and idle fine so definitely try what they are saying! I messed up when reattaching the throttle..now there's too much play in the cable so when I lift the warm up lever it doesn't really advance the throttle arm at all... Don't really know how to fix that issue but my only advice is don't do whatever I did when reattaching the cable lol!!

Turns out she needed to be opened up. Compression checked out great. Stuck it in the water shifted really quick opened it up idling real smooth now. Going to take it out Sunday and play..will know more then. Thanks guys

Just curious how and if you resolved your problem. I've been trying to get mine to idle since last year. I've done a complete rebuild ..... powerhead, pistons, rings, seals, and gaskets. Carbs, water pump. I threw in the white towel in the spring and took it to a mechanic. He had it for 6 weeks before throwing in the white towel and asked me to just come and get it... No charge.

Its a 1979 100hp V4. Same symptoms. Will fire up with the warm up lever, but once it's down, coughs and spits, pukes, then dies. SPark on all 4 and good even compression.

I havent done much more since the last time out. It now runs on muffs but my schedule and lack of any extra cash has it back in the garage. Might try again this weekend...
