1979 merc 20 recoil spring

Hi

The starter rope broke on the above mentioned outboard. I have managed to replace the rope but I am not able to figure out how to re-tension the spring. Does anyone know the procedure?

After installing a new tab washer you use a large screwdriver through the 3/4 end wrench that you tighten the nut with and turn the shaft till you have the tension you want then tighten the nut and bend the lock tabs.

Thanks, I'd tried that yesterday to no avail, it just kept turning. After your post I did some additional dismanteling and found that the tab that engages the spring had jumped the track (so to speak). I re-aligned everything and now all is well.
