I have a 1979 Merc 50 it has ran great for the last 4 seasons. End of last year things went down hill. The motor began to spit gas from the lower carb out of a 1/8" brass hole to the upper right of the choke butterfly. I decided that it was time to rebuild the carbs. I did and found alot of dirt particles. So I traced it back to the pick-up tube in the metal gas can were someone had replaced the screen with a lantern mantel ziped tied to it  . So I fixed that added a inline fuel filter after the bulb also replaced the gas line going to the pumps. Full rebuild and clean. I have run the motor flawlessly for the last two weeks and low and behold sunday out of the blue it does the same thing? Any possible answers?

My thoughts:
I believe this hole is an overflow for the bowl.
1. Maybe I missed a spec of dirt and is blocking the needle valve?
2. Bad float?
3. I did not see a seat for the needle could it have groved the body and it rotates till it gets stuck in it?

Any ideas would help

Problem hopefully solved! There is a small brass deflector plate below the over flow inlet that was restricting the float! Just took awhile of looking at it to figure it out.
