I have a 1979 Mercury 115 2 Stroke 6 Cylinder Outboard that I recently acquired from family. It was outside for 7 years under a cover not used. I inspected it lubricating as per maintenance manual, replaced water pump, and it fired up right away to my surprise. I took it out to the lake and it ran perfect. The next day all hell broke loose.

I noticed the wires were very brittle and when touched they just broke off. I ended up replacing the wire harness with a new one and all gas hoses. Now it just cranks but won?t fire I also cleaned the carbs and used carb kits for them. I?m suspecting the Stator is causing issues, as the wires coming of that were very weak and broke as well. I replaced what I could on the two wires.

I believe the stator has nothing to do with the ignition system on this motor, but are you sure you hooked up all the wires correctly?

Your motor sounds like it has a distributor. If so, the stator has no effect on the ignition. Look on the CDIElectronics web site for the switchbox test for your battery-powered CDI ignition.

Good news, I replaced the coil and it started up and running. Yes, it does have a distributor.
